$1.6 billion

- The value the WNBA & NWSL is expected to increase in the next three years โ€” according to a report from the Wasserman Collective on the new economy of women's sports

Three big stories to know this week in women's sports

1. NWSL Finals rise to the record-breaking occasion โšฝ

In a 1-0 match, aired nationally on CBS primetime TV on Saturday night (!!), the Orlando Pride topped the Washington Spirit โ€” and soccer legend Marta ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท finally got her title. Plus, she did it in front of her mom, who was watching her play for the first time in the U.S. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

BUT. Don't ask if Marta's done yet! The 38-year-old has said she'll play two more seasons and help her national team qualify for the next World Cup โ€” set to be a home event for the Brazilians.

In the championship game, Zambian star Barbra Banda scored the only goal on a fast moving split between defenders, Trinity Rodman was *not* happy about the refereeing, and the Washington Spirit pulled everyone up (including their goalie) in the final injury time minutes.

Congratulations, @ORLPride, for winning the National Womenโ€™s Soccer League Championship. An incredible season full of determination and Orlando pride โ€“ and proving yet again that everyone watches womenโ€™s sports.

- POTUS tweet

The biggest success though? A year of unprecedented growth for the league โ€” which saw increases in average attendance and viewership, records broken throughout the finals, and new investment and valuations for teams.

If you build it, they will come ๐Ÿ’œ

2. BYU wins 6th national title at NCAA cross-country championships ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

One of the things that separates cross-country from most professional running races is that athletes compete as a team. And nowhere was that more true than at the national meet this past weekend.

Without getting a single runner in the top 10 individually, BYU pulled off the national title through a combo of depth and sticking together.

โ€œThat last kilometer was whatever you had for the sisterhood. It wasnโ€™t about ourselves. It was about the women we were running with.โ€

- Lexy Halladay-Lowry, the teamโ€™s top runner after the race

Last year, the team came in ranked #3 and imploded in the second half. What did coach Diljeet Taylor tell them immediately after that race? "Just when the caterpillar thinks the world is ending, she becomes a butterfly." Butterflies then became a theme for the team this season.

[Taylor is nothing if not a quotable machine. And, also, one of the few women in top-level collegiate coaching.]

With the team competition so tight, underdogs West Virginia University and Providence College were able to slide in at #2 and #3 ๐Ÿ‘

And for the individual title: Alabama sophomore Doris Lemngole pulled away with a little under a quarter-mile to go. Last year, she came in second to Parker Valby, but this year she went with the lead pack and outkicked them. Lemngole didn't actually start running until high school in Kenya and then was recruited to 'Bama.

3. A Thanksgiving reminder: Eat and exercise however you want

Thanksgiving has become the most popular day for running in America. Last year, nearly 1 million people participated in a Turkey Trot ๐Ÿฆƒ

READ: Curious how the Turkey Trot became so popular? It all started in Buffalo, New York.

And, here at Feisty, we're all about getting outside for a run or ride or hike or throwing some weights around a parking lot, whatever activity you enjoy. But enjoy is the key word there (!) โ€” because we're also not about having to "earn" your food. (Not to mention: If you wear a fitness tracker, keep in mind they consistently struggle to measure calories correctly.)

Plus: All foods can be "good" foods within the context of the value they provide to you! ๐Ÿฅง

With 43% of women reporting increased levels of stress and anxiety during the holidays โ€” while only 32% of men report those increases โ€” don't put more pressure on yourself this week. Be kind to yourself (and each other), go for a Turkey Trot if you want to Turkey Trot, take a break and mentally recharge with a solo bike ride if you need to mentally recharge, and eat the pie if you want to eat the pie!

Tip of the week

After just two weeks of reducing their calorie intake by 50%, a study on 12 trained female athletes found their time to exhaustion in a cycling test went down by 18% โ€” ie. they hit exhaustion and got tired much faster after just two weeks of not eating enough โ€” and their power output decreased by 7.8%. Some of this effect remained even after three days of refueling.

Since muscle oxygen utilization and glycogen supply were not affected and did not appear to explain the decreases in performance, there may be another phsyiological explanation โ€” like not eating enough messes you up in multiple ways when training!

Your Feisty recommendations

What to watch: "Four Seconds Changed Everything" โ€” about the closest Tour de France finish, men's or women's, in history

What to read: Not to be on a four-second theme, but: "The most controversial Olympics moment came down to four seconds" ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™€๏ธ

What's a fun fact to share at Thanksgiving this week: Did you know Chappell Roan was a high school runner

What made us laugh: If women commented on male cyclists like men comment on female cyclists โ€” or runners ๐Ÿ˜‚ #womeninmaledominatedfields

OK this one made us laugh, too: If we celebrated International Men's Day like we celebrate International Women's Day
