— A WNBA attendance record for an expansion team's first game, set by the new Portland Fire — as the WNBA kicked off its 30th year

History made at the 253-mile Cocodona 🏃‍♀️

We'd be remiss if we didn't start this week with: Rachel Entrekin's overall win at the Cocodona 250 👑

  • Rachel was the first woman to win the overall title — beating all men & women — at the 253-mile race through Arizona

  • She finished in 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 48 seconds and beat the next person by nearly 80 minutes

  • She was the first woman under 60 hours (and slept just 19 minutes total!)

  • And she broke Dan Green's *overall* course record by over two hours

She isn't the first woman to win an ultra-race outright — there's evidence that the performance gap between men and women closes as the races get longer. But her win also changed people's perceptions of racing these 200+ mile events and captured the imagination.

It even made ESPN! 😂 "I'm impressed, but I'm also confused."

>> WHY NOT YOU!

A new generation at La Vuelta Femenina 🚲

Going into the final day of the Spanish Grand Tour it seemed that Anna van der Breggen was set to win her first major race post-retirement — but then 23-year-old Paula Blasi put down an incredible ride on L’Angliru (one of the toughest climbs in the cycling world) to become not just the first Spanish woman to win the race, but the first to ever land on the podium.

It was the first time the women have raced L'Angliru (12.1 km at 10.3% average grade). When its inclusion was rumored and debated, Blasi said:

"Little by little, we're going to shed the notion that women can't climb those mountain passes."

PWHL finals delayed by illness 🏒

Tennis and cycling aren't the only sports being crippled by viruses sweeping through the teams. Last night's deciding PWHL game — which would have finalized the finals — was delayed to tonight due to an illness taking out the Montreal team.

How do the playoffs work?

  • Teams play a best-of-five semifinals & then finals

  • Ottawa has already won their semi over Boston and locked down their place in the finals

  • Montreal and Minnesota are now set to play Game 5 tonight

Finals then start on Monday, May 18 🥇

🏒 ALSO: The PWHL will expand next season to add a team in Detroit and potentially in Las Vegas, as well

The highlight reel

  • The Red Bull Wings for Life 👟 is a global run, where athletes in different countries all start off running at the same time. In each location, 30 minutes after the last runner, a Red Bull car starts driving at a set speed to catch the runners — getting faster as it goes — and the last runner caught anywhere in the world wins. 🏃‍♀️ Mikky Keetels,  running in the Netherlands, won the global women's race with a record-breaking 62.2km. She was holding off Esther Pfeiffer, who was running in Germany.

  • Sina Frei won both the XCO and XCC races at the first Mountain Bike World Cup of the season in South Korea. 🚵‍♀️

  • And Anna Weinbeer won the marathon (XCM) World Cup. 🚵‍♀️

  • 🏐 Dallas beat Omaha for the Major League Volleyball championship and the $1 million prize money.

  • Nebraska, Penn State, Florida, and SMU plan to headline an exhibition volleyball match (semis & a final) in the 100,000-person Dallas Cowboys stadium in August, with $1 million in prize money to be distributed as NIL payments. It's being called Spikes Under the Lights 🏐

  • 🏈 University of Central Florida beat the University of Florida (and six other teams) to win the first national college flag football title.

  • Both the men's and women's March Madness tournaments will expand to 76 teams. 🏀

  • Kate Fahey won the singles title at the Pro Pickleball Association Tour Finals,  while Anna Bright and Anna Leigh Waters won the women's doubles

  • 🤽‍♀️ The U.S. finished the water polo World Cup Division 1 tournament in the #1 spot after a win over Italy.

  • 🎾 Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka are among players threatening a Grand Slam boycott over prize money.

  • Kwanza Jones will be the first Black woman to hold a majority stake in an MLB franchise, with her group's purchase of the San Diego Padres.

  • A record 1,338,544 applications were put in for the 2027 London Marathon — with the largest number of applications coming from the women's 20-29 age-group. 🌠
