Unbound: the biggest gravel race of the year

In 2006, just 34 cyclists raced around the gravel roads outside Emporia, Kansas. Last year, there were over 5,000 riders across five distances.

While distances now range from the 25-mile to the 350-mile XL, the elite 200-mile race is the premier event and the second stop of the Life Time Grand Prix. It also has its own $60,000 prize purse. Karolina Migoล„ set a course record last year, but Sofรญa Gรณmez Villafaรฑe has already won the first stop on the Grand Prix (in Sea Otter) and the Traka 200 (in Europe).

Plus, the whole thing is basically a giant festival of cycling and gravel.

Wait, what do I need to know about The Enhanced Games? ๐Ÿ’‰

Oof, if you don't want to know about the drug-fueled spectacle in Las Vegas this past weekend, you don't need to.

But if you just want a quick primer:

๐Ÿ’‰ The Enhanced Games were supposedly created as an Olympics but *with* banned performance-enhancing drugs

๐Ÿ’ต Athletes โ€” mostly men, but including 11 women โ€” were signed to big paydays ($250K for a win & $1 million for a world record) in swimming, track, and weightlifting

๐Ÿค” Originally, organizers touted their stunt as an effort to bring doping into the light and make sports "safer" โ€” BUT the parent company (The Enhanced Group) later came out with a line of supplements and drugs to sell to the public

๐Ÿ’Š It became evident that the spectacle was both a very expensive clinical trial using athletes as the test subjects *and* a massive marketing play to sell peptides

Did it work?

Not really? While it's hard to know if the marketing scheme was a success, the event itself was considered a bit of a flop โ€” with false starts, re-do attempts for athletes, and just one "world record" at the very end of the night in the 50m freestyle. The women's winning 100m track time of 11.25 seconds would have been distantly behind everyone in the final of the Paris Olympics...
