โ€œI told myself, โ€˜If Faith is trying for a world record in Eugene, why not me too?'โ€

โ€” Beatrice Chebet on how Faith Kipyegon inspired her to go after her own world record. Both women set new world records at the Pre Classic over the weekend โ€” Chebet becoming the first woman to break 14:00 in the 5,000m on the track and Kipyegon running a 3:48 1500m. Kipyegon was met at the finish line by Chebet, as the two best friends celebrated their respective records ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฟ

Three big stories to know this week in women's sports

1. Men's Tour de France? No, it's all about the Giro d'Italia Women! ๐Ÿšฒ

One of the oldest high-profile women's stage races, the Giro d'Italia is celebrating its 36th anniversary this year with a plan to rival the Tour de France Femmes in challenging beautiful stages and intense racing. This will also be the last year the eight-stage event takes place at the same time as the Tour de France Hommes before moving to an earlier season date in June next year.

The contenders

While a few big names are saving themselves for the Tour de France Femmes in three weeks, the line-up in Italy includes defending champ (and Italian national champ) Elisa Longo Borghini ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น, four-time winner Anna van der Breggen ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ, world champion Lotte Kopecky ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช, all-around legend Marianne Vos ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ (looking to add to her 32 career stage wins here), and Marlen Reusser ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ coming off overall victories at the Vuelta a Burgos and Tour de Suisse.

The race started with an opening time trial โ€” won by Reusser โ€” and finishes with a penultimate queen stage this upcoming Saturday that ends at the top of the Monte Nerone โ›ฐ๏ธ (The rider with the fastest cumulative time across all eight days wins the overall!) And we've already had a massive crash that took down most of the peloton today. Reusser currently sits just 13 seconds back of Anna Henderson and Longo Borghini is 31 seconds back in third ๐Ÿ˜ณ

๐Ÿ“บ WATCH: The race airs on TNT Sports & Discovery+ in Europe, on FloBikes in Canada, and on HBO Max in the U.S.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ WHOA: Marianne Vos casually untie and change her shoes *while* riding mid-race

2. The first ever all-women's boxing card at Madison Square Garden ๐ŸฅŠ

This Friday, Katie Taylor v. Amanda Serrano will face-off in an epic third match-up that headlines the first all-women's card at Madison Square Garden. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

74 million viewers

This will be the third showdown between the two boxers โ€” and it comes after their fight back in November averaged 74 million viewers on Netflix and became the most watched women's sporting event ever.

At the time, the bout was an opening act for the heavily publicized Jake Paul v. Mike Tyson fight. But the headliner ended up being a snoozer, and Taylor v. Serrano was the undisputed match of the night ๐Ÿ‘‘

Who will win this time?

So far it's been 2-0 for Taylor in the two times they've fought. New York-based Serrano ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ท (who is a world champion in *seven weight classes*) has to step up three weight classes to fight junior welterweight champ Taylor ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

Last fight, Serrano was also bloodied from a bad cut above the eye in Round 4 and criticized Taylor for head-butting. And the crowd had strong feelings as the belt was awarded to Taylor following a unanimous judges' decision.

๐ŸฅŠ ALSO: Serrano was pushing to make this fight 12 rounds of three minutes (like most men's fights), but no agreement could be reached and they'll instead square off for 10 rounds of two minutes (the standard in women's fights).

๐Ÿ“บ WATCH: The matches will air exclusively on Netflix on Friday โ€” with undercards starting at 8 p.m. ET and the main event beginning at 11 p.m. ET

A TIMELINE OF WOMEN'S BOXING: The first women's boxing match is considered to have taken place in 1876, and both men's and women's boxing were introduced as display events at the 1904 Olympics but only men's boxing was accepted. It wasn't until 2012 that women's boxing made its debut at the Olympic Games.

3. WNBA Players Association rejects league's initial contract proposal

โ€œAs the league grows, itโ€™s time for the CBA that reflects our true value. We are fighting for a fair share of business that we built."

Last year, the WNBA Players Association announced it would opt out of its current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) โ€” giving the players and the league until Oct. 31 of this year to negotiate a new one. With a new $2.2 million media deal signed last year, and league revenue and team valuations skyrocketing, players want a piece of this expanding pie!

But, initial talks so far are not going well ๐Ÿ’ฐ

There are two major issues:

  • Salary caps & how much of league revenue goes to players

  • Roster limits โ€” which cap teams at just 12 players

At the core of the issue is how much of the growing WNBA revenue (now at $200 milion) goes to players. Under the old agreement, players receive less than 10% of total league revenue and their compensation has not gone up as league revenue has gone up. By comparison NBA players get roughly 50% of what the NBA brings in ๐Ÿค”

CONSIDER: No, the WNBA is not "unprofitable"

Tip of the week

Walking with a weighted vest โ€” sometimes called "rucking" when it's with a backpack or rucksack โ€” isn't new but it certainly seems trendy.

There's some evidence that exercise with a weighted vest can help stem bone loss. Some studies have also found that postmenopausal women who performed weighted vest exercises maintained bone density (but it's not clear if it was the weighted vest or just the exercising).

And when it comes to general fitness, research has found that the weight needs to be pretty heavy to have a measurable impact on calorie burn.

Our conclusion? It can be a great tool, but so can other kinds of exercise! And if you do use a heavy weighted vest or rucksack, you want to maintain a strong core and pelvic floor during activity.

The highlight reel

  • ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ The World Aquatics Championships start this week โ€” but it's got a little bit of everything: water polo, diving, open water, artistic swimming, and regular swimming! Water polo is first up on the schedule, with the first round of games this Thursday (U.S. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ v. China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ), then swimming races start later this month on July 26.

  • In anticipation of the UEFA European Championships โšฝ (known as Euros), Switzerland changed their stoplights to a girl kicking a soccer ball. On the field, in opening pool play, defending champs England lost to France after a controversial offsides call.

  • โšฝ And ahead of Copa America (Latin America's championship tournament), Uruguay's women's team is protesting unfair treatment.

  • The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series took a scary turn in Italy last week when Molly Carlson slipped on the edge of the platform. ๐Ÿ˜จ Thank goodness she was able to react in mid-air!

  • ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ A Masters world record holder, Clare Elms, 61, ran a 4:59 1500m this weekend โ€” making her what is believed to be the oldest woman to ever break 5:00 in the 1500m. But if you know of someone older who's done it, shoot us a note ๐Ÿ“ง

  • ๐ŸŽ๏ธ  Katherine Legge also became the first woman to record a top 20 finish in the NASCAR Cup Series since Danica Patrick.

  • ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ Mattie Rogers won the U.S. national weightlifting championships after suffering a mini-stroke earlier this month.

  • Fan favorite Alison Jackson won the Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ cycling national championships. It's been a busy few weeks of cycling national championships โ€” here's a cheat sheet of the winners from around the world ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ

  • ๐Ÿšฒ Nina Hoffman won the UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup just weeks after a massive crash.

  • Defending Ironman world champ Laura Philipp won the legendary Challenge Roth race in Germany.๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

  • But the triathlon finish of the weekend was a sprint for the half-Ironman European Championship between Lena Meissner and Caroline Pohle. Meissner was originally declared the winner, but after a protest she was relegated to second for "blocking." ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

  • Hellen Obiri won the massive Peachtree 10K Road Race over 4th of July weekend and Susannah Scaroni won the wheelchair division for the fifth time.

  • โ›ฐ๏ธ Katie Schide, who won UTMB and Western States last summer, will go after the Hardrock 100 record this weekend.

  • Heptathlete Taliyah Brooks' lawsuit against USATF over unsafe conditions at the 2021 Olympic Trials is still ongoing.

  • ๐ŸŽพ We are now guaranteed a new first-time Wimbledon champ.

  • After the U.S. federal government withheld $175 million in funding from UPenn, the school capitulated to the current administration and agreed to erase all previous swimming records from trans swimmer Lia Thomas.

  • The Cuban national women's volleyball team was denied U.S. visas for a tournament, and the Senegal woman's basketball team was denied visas for a training camp last month.
