Women's hockey is booming πŸ“ˆ

As the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) heads into the Walter Cup finals and wraps up its third season, things are looking πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

According to the PWHL:

πŸ’₯ 1,116,497 fans attended games during the regular season β€” surpassing 1 million for the first time

πŸ’₯ Average attendance rose 28% from last year and is up 71% from the inaugural season

πŸ’₯ The Takeover Tour β€” which brought 16 games to neutral city locations β€” also set U.S. attendance records

πŸ’₯ Online merch sales increased 50% and Youtube viewership increased 77%

The two new expansion teams (Seattle & Vancouver) also saw the highest average attendance and the highest first-year merchandise sales of any team to date. And the league has now announced even *more* expansion teams for the 2026-27 season:

πŸ’ Detroit, Michigan

πŸ’ Las Vegas, Nevada
πŸ’ San Jose, California
πŸ’ Hamilton, Ontario

Tell me more about the playoff finals

Now it's time to name a season winner: Montreal Victoire v. Ottawa Charge

With the two-time defending champs, Minnesota Frost, eliminated during the semis with a late goal by Montreal's legendary clutch player Marie-Philip Poulin, we'll have a NEW Walter Cup champ for the first time.

Best of five β€” meaning the first team to win three games wins the title. Montreal was up 2-0 games, but last night Ottawa held them off. We now go to Game 4 tomorrow night!

πŸ“Ί WATCH: Game 4 - Wednesday, May 20 @ 7 p.m. ET on ION in the U.S. & TSN in Canada & on Youtube outside of Canada

**Game 5 on Saturday @ 12:30 p.m. ET if it comes to it...

What's the heck is going on with Canada Team Pursuit? 🚲

In early May, Cycling Canada notified athletes it would not put forward a women's team pursuit squad at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships later this year *and* it would not pursue qualification for the L.A. Olympics in the women's team pursuit. However, the men's team pursuit squad remains.

Why?

Cycling Canada says it was a performance-based decision: "Results during the current Olympic cycle were not trending towards medal-winning potential. In addition, performances during competition and training did not indicate that these gaps were likely to be closed in time for the LA2028 Games."

But people pointed out that the women have won all of Canada's Olympic medals in track cycling. This includes a team pursuit bronze in 2016. The Canada men's team pursuit is currently ranked lower than the women's.

Yes, the women's team pursuit's performance has slipped in more recent years β€” BUT (!) athletes have argued they weren't given support: no adequate time to train together, no performance plan or aerodynamic testing, and no clear objectives to hit for team funding.

The five athletes on the squad have filed an appeal and written an open letter to Cycling Canada. Two Cycling Canada board members have resigned. And other athletes have also opened up about the instability and lack of communication over the years from the governing body.

Alison Jackson β€” Paris-Roubaix winner, one of the most well-known Canadian cyclists, and the national team athlete representative on the Cycling Canada board β€” wrote in a comment:

"What makes the performances of Cycling Canada great is the passion and commitment and hard work and talent of the athletes! We need the organization to match the energy and investment of their athletes."
