Prize money in trail running? What's next?!
(Kidding, kidding. Kinda.)
This past weekend, backed by Nike, Broken Arrow offered the biggest prize purse in trail running: $150K across its three distances, with $30K to the winner of the premier 23km race.
The races — a straight-up the mountain ascent, a 46km two-loop mountainous course, and the elite technical 23km — are known for their technical terrain, bell-ringing at the finish, and homegrown feel. But can you keep the homegrown feel (the "spirit" of trail, as it were) and become a professional, or even an Olympic (!), sport? Don't these athletes, who are doing it as a living, deserve to be paid?
These are the question that seem to be on the minds of trail runners everywhere! In contrast, the historic 100-mile Western States race, which goes off this Saturday, still does NOT pay prize money to winners.
Winner winner
Ascent: SkiMo Olympian Anna Gibson won the straight-up the mountain Ascent race
46km: Dani Moreno won the 46km (check out this head-to-head across the top of the mountain)
23km: And Florea Madalina won the 23km and the $30K (do not check out this video unless you want to see some post-race vomiting from the top two)
